Warning: Very dated but will keep it here for reference
Many people have asked me how fast a Millenium is compared to a K1, Tarpon, XT, Evo .….
Here are some test results.
Test conditions:
Deep, flat freshwater (
Negligible wind.
Speed and heart rates were measure using a Timex bodylink system.
Maximum speed:
This is the maximum speed that could be kept for 10 seconds
(the time needed for the GPS to get to a stable reading).
Boat |
Maximum speed [km/hr] |
Millenium |
16.9 |
K1 |
16.9 |
Tarpon |
16.2 |
XT |
16.1 |
Heart rate at 12km/hr:
12km/hr for me is a good cruising pace, just too fast to have a comfortable conversation.
Boat |
Heart rate |
Millenium |
144 |
K1 |
144 |
Tarpon |
149 |
XT |
149 |
Speed at 120 HR:
120 HR for me is a warm-up, comfortable chatting pace.
Boat |
Speed [km/hr] |
Millenium |
~10.5 |
K1 |
~10.5 |
Tarpon |
~10 |
XT |
~10 |
Conclusions:
In deep, flat water the Millenium and a K1 have the same performance, while the Tarpon and XT were virtually identical.
A Millenium is about 5% faster than a Tarpon/XT. In a 1 hour race this corresponds to 3 minutes.
A XT will never be more than 5% slower than a Millenium. If a paddler struggles with stability in a Millenium, the XT will be less than 5% slower, and in some cases faster than a Millenium.
To put speeds into perspective:
Ben Fouhy’s world record K1 1000m time of 3:24 corresponds to an average speed over 1000m of 17.6km/hr.
